DUNKS
Production of the Dunk started in 1985 as a high top and at the time the shoes were available in the colors of a few College Universities. The colleges of choice were some of those who were known to dominate the court in their brackets. The program was called “College Colors” and those among the Universities to have their colors graced on a pair of Dunks were University of Maryland, St. Johns University, Villanova University, University of Iowa, Syracuse University, University of Michigan, University of Kentucky and lastly the University of Nevada. As the years went on the Nike Dunk slowly faded out of the picture and didnt hit the level of popularity it has today. Other designs which were released by Nike, such as Michael Jordans first signature shoe (and every one to follow), were catching the attention of the buyers and the sales of the Dunk started to hit a downfall. It wasnt until 1998 when Nike reintroduced the Dunk shoes with fresh new ideas that it gained popularity and became one of Nike top selling models. Whereas the shoes were originally designed with basketball in mind Nike took a different approach with the sneaker this time and transformed it into pretty much a fashion icon which is known around the world. With the reintroduction of the Dunk Nike continued to pump out colorways of the classic university colors however this time they added random colorways which didnt relate to any school at all. From 1998 when the Dunk was reintroduced up until the year 2000 the sneakers came with a nylon tongue and arch supports but besides that Nike stuck to the original design from 1985.After some time, Nike created a Dunk specifically for skateboarders, known as the Nike SB Dunk. Between the reintroduction of the original Dunk with new ideas and the formation of the Nike SB division the Nike Dunk family was growing at a rapid pace and taking the sneaker industry by storm. To see many of the latest Nike Dunk releases along with many Custom Dunks from todays popular sneaker customizers please check out the “Nike Dunk” category.
